How to start a WiFi business in a hostel or lodge
Updated 4 October 2026
Hostels and lodges are the easiest places to start a WiFi business. Many people live close together, they all need data, and mobile data is expensive and often slow.
Here is a plan you can follow, from the first access point to regular customers.
Start with one building
Pick one hostel or lodge and get it working well before you expand. Speak to the owner or caretaker first. You need permission to mount equipment, a safe place for it, and a power source.
Count the rooms. That tells you roughly how many customers you can reach and how many access points you need.
The equipment
- An internet source: Starlink where there is no fibre, or a fibre line where there is.
- A controller or router that puts the WiFi behind a login page. TP-Link Omada and MikroTik both do this.
- Access points placed so every room gets a strong signal. Corridors and stairwells usually work better than one corner of the building.
- Backup power, so the WiFi stays on when the light goes.
Plans that sell in hostels
Students buy small and often. Keep the list short, so choosing is easy.
- A cheap daily plan for people who buy as they go.
- A weekly plan that costs less per day than the daily one.
- A monthly plan for your regulars.
- A night plan sold only in the evening, for people who study or download at night.
Put a data limit or a speed limit on every plan. One heavy user on an unlimited plan can slow the WiFi for everybody else.
Tell people how to buy
- Put a poster on every floor with your WiFi name and your shop link.
- Post the link on your WhatsApp status and in the hostel's group chats.
- Name the WiFi network after your business, so people know who to buy from.
The fewer steps between seeing the poster and getting online, the more you sell. With HotspotManager a resident opens your link or your Telegram bot, pays, and gets a code straight away.
Keep customers coming back
Most of your income will come from a small group of regulars. Know who they are. Your HotspotManager dashboard shows who buys most, who has come back, and who has gone quiet, so you can send a message before they drift to another seller.
Watch when people buy, too. If most sales come in the evening, that is the time to post a reminder or an offer.
Before you grow
Selling internet access to the public is regulated by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC). Ask the NCC or a lawyer which licence your business needs before you add more buildings.
Sell your WiFi automatically
HotspotManager gives you a WiFi shop website and a Telegram bot. Guests pay, get their code instantly, and the money lands in your bank. It works with TP-Link Omada and MikroTik.
